7.2

Times tables to 12 × 12

Year 6
Multiply and divide mentally, drawing on known facts, including times tables to 12 × 12 (Year 5)
Story. Ruby is making 12 boxes of pencils, with 9 pencils in each box. She needs the total number of pencils, and she works it out in her head.

Rule

Learn the times tables to 12 × 12, then use them to work out others. For 12 × 9, use 10 × 9 = 90 and 2 × 9 = 18, which gives 108.

Multiplication can be done in either order: 9 × 12 = 12 × 9.

Key ideas

  • Know the times tables to 12 × 12 by heart.
  • Split a bigger number to multiply it in parts.
  • Swap the numbers: 9 × 12 is the same as 12 × 9.
Worked example 7.2.1
Work out 12 × 9 in your head.

Method. Split 12 into 10 and 2, then multiply each part by 9.

  1. Split the bigger number into 10 and the rest. 12 is 10 + 2.
    12 = 10 + 2
  2. Multiply each part. 10 × 9 = 90 and 2 × 9 = 18.
    90 + 18
  3. Add the parts. Add the two products.
    90 + 18 = 108
  4. Write the answer.
    108

Check. 9 × 12 = 12 × 9. ✓

Watch out. Do not use 12 × 9 = 90 + 9: the 12 splits into 10 and 2, not 10 and 9.

Worked example 7.2.2
Work out 7 × 8 in your head.

Method. Use a known fact from the times table.

  1. Use the known fact. 7 × 8 is in the times table.
    7 × 8 = 56
  2. Check by swapping the numbers. 8 × 7 gives the same answer.
    8 × 7 = 56
  3. Write the answer.
    56

Check. 8 × 7 = 56. ✓

Worked example 7.2.3
Work out 6 × 12 in your head.

Method. Split 12 into 10 and 2, or use a known fact.

  1. Use the known fact. 6 × 12 is in the times table.
    6 × 12 = 72
  2. Check by swapping the numbers. 12 × 6 gives the same answer.
    12 × 6 = 72
  3. Write the answer.
    72

Check. 12 × 6 = 6 × 12. ✓
