KS2 Maths textbook
Year 6 Coordinates, Reflection and Translation: lesson and practice
- Strand Geometry
- Level Year 6
- Practice 98 questions with step-by-step solutions
By the end of this chapter you will be able to
- Write the coordinates of a point in any of the four quadrants, using negative numbers, across first
- Name the quadrant of a point, and explain why a point on an axis is in no quadrant
- Plot points and draw a shape from its corners, and find the length of a side along a grid line
- Find the missing corner of a rectangle from three of its corners
- Translate a point or a shape on the coordinate plane, and describe a translation in words
- Reflect a point or a shape in the x-axis and in the y-axis
- Explain that a translation or a reflection keeps the size and shape of a shape
You should already know
- Negative numbers, counting through zero on a number line (Year 5, Chapter 1; Year 6, Chapter 1)
- Position and direction on a grid, and coordinates in the first quadrant (Year 4, Chapter 10)
- Translations and reflections in a mirror line on a grid (Year 5, Chapter 10)
- Perimeter and area of rectangles (Year 5, Chapter 8)
Where this leads
- Reflecting shapes in lines other than the axes, and coordinates in more complex shapes (KS3)
- Statistics: pie charts, line graphs and the mean (Year 6, Chapter 12)
Lessons in this chapter
- 11.1 Positions on the full grid
- 11.2 Plotting points and drawing shapes
- 11.3 Translating on the coordinate plane
- 11.4 Reflecting in the x-axis
- 11.5 Reflecting in the y-axis
- 11.6 Keeping the shape, and two moves
- Summary and key words
- Check-up and SATs-style questions
