Leaves: catching light and making food

Year 3
Identify and describe the function of leaves: they catch light and use it to make food for the plant
Story. Oliver counts the leaves on a bean plant by the classroom window. The leaves are wide and flat, and they face the light. His teacher says, “Leaves are the food-makers of the plant.” Oliver asks, “How do they make food?”

Leaves are usually wide and flat. This shape helps them to catch light.

Leaves use light, water and air to make food for the plant. The food made in the leaves moves through the stem to the other parts of the plant.

Without light, the leaves cannot make food. A plant kept in a dark place cannot make food from light.

Light falls on a leaf, and the food made in the leaf moves through the stem.

Key ideas

  • Leaves are usually wide and flat, so that they can catch light.
  • Leaves use light, water and air to make food for the plant.
  • Food moves from the leaves to the rest of the plant through the stem.
  • Without light, leaves cannot make food.
Worked example 2.4.1
Which shape catches more light: a wide, flat leaf or a thin, straight stalk?

Method. Think about the surface that faces the light.

  1. Read the first shape. A wide, flat leaf has a large surface facing the light.
    large surface
  2. Read the second shape. A thin, straight stalk has only a small surface facing the light.
    small surface
  3. Compare them. The wide, flat shape catches more light.
    more light
  4. Write the answer.
    a wide, flat leaf

Check. More surface means more light is caught. ✓

Watch out. Wide and flat is the shape that helps leaves catch light.

Worked example 2.4.2
Oliver puts a bean plant in a dark cupboard for a week. Can its leaves make food from light there? Write yes or no.

Method. Think about what leaves need to make food.

  1. Think about the light. Leaves use light to make food.
    light needed
  2. Check the cupboard. There is no light in a dark cupboard.
    no light
  3. Decide. So the leaves cannot make food from light in the cupboard.
    no
  4. Write the answer.
    no

Check. The leaves need light to make food. ✓

Worked example 2.4.3
What do leaves use light, water and air to make? Write the word.

Method. Think about what the leaves produce for the plant.

  1. Read the question. It asks what leaves make with light, water and air.
    make with light
  2. Think about the plant. The plant needs food to grow and stay healthy, and the leaves provide it.
    food for the plant
  3. Write the word. Leaves use light, water and air to make food.
    food
  4. Write the answer.
    food

Check. Leaves are the food-makers of the plant. ✓

Watch out

Watch out: leaves do not take in food from the soil. The roots take in water and minerals. The leaves make food, using light.

Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). Ask a grown-up to help you find a leaf that has fallen from a tree. Hold it up to a window and look at the light coming through it. Draw the leaf, and write one word to describe how much light gets through. Wash your hands afterwards.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “Where does the plant get its food? Why is the leaf flat? What would happen in a dark cupboard?”

Exercise 2D  Leaves: catching light and making food

1
FWhich of these do leaves NOT use to make food: water, light or stones? Write the one.
2
FLeaves are usually wide and ___. Write the missing word.
3
FWhich part carries the food made in the leaves to the rest of the plant? Write the part.
4
FLook at the plant picture. Which letter shows a leaf?
ABCD
5
FAnswer each part.
(a)Leaves make ___ for the plant.
(b)Leaves use ___ to make food.
(c)Food is carried through the ___.
6
PSA bean plant has 10 leaves on one side of the stem and 6 leaves on the other side. How many leaves are there in all?
7
PSA leaf in deep shade gets much less light than a leaf in full sun. Will it make food as quickly? Write yes or no.
8
PSUse the table. Which leaf is the longest?
LeafLength (cm)
Leaf A8
Leaf B5
Leaf C11
9
PSWorking scientifically. Half of a bean plant’s leaves are covered with dark card for a day. Will the plant make less food? Write yes or no.
10
RIs this true or false? Leaves make food in the dark. Write true or false.
11
RExplain in one sentence why a plant with all its leaves cut off cannot make food.
