The parts working together

Year 3
Identify and describe the functions of the different parts of flowering plants, including trees
Story. Class 3C compares a tall tree in the park with the bean plant in their classroom. Both have roots, a stem, leaves and flowers. Priya says, “The tree’s trunk does the same job as the bean’s stem.”

All the main parts of a plant work together. If one part cannot do its job, the whole plant may not grow well.

PartMain job
Rootshold the plant in the soil; take in water and minerals
Stemholds up the leaves and flower; carries water and minerals up, and food from the leaves
Leavescatch light and use it to make food
Flowermakes seeds
The four main parts and their jobs.

A tree has the same four main parts as a bean plant. Its trunk is a thick, woody stem. Its flowers may be small and hard to see, but they still make seeds.

A tree: trunk, leaves and roots
A tree has roots, a trunk, leaves and flowers, just like a bean plant.

Key ideas

  • All four main parts of a plant work together.
  • A tree has the same four main parts as a bean plant.
  • A tree trunk is a thick, woody stem.
  • If the roots are damaged, the plant may not take in enough water.
Worked example 2.6.1
A plant has no roots. Name two jobs that it will not be able to do well.

Method. Think about the jobs of the roots.

  1. Think about the first job. Roots hold the plant in the soil.
    holding in soil
  2. Think about the second job. Roots take in water and minerals from the soil.
    water and minerals
  3. Write the two jobs. Without roots, the plant cannot hold itself in the soil, or take in water and minerals.
    holding and taking in
  4. Write the answer.
holding the plant in the soil, and taking in water and minerals

Check. Both jobs belong to the roots. ✓

Worked example 2.6.2
Which part makes food for the whole plant: roots, leaves or flower? Write the part.

Method. Think about which part uses light to make food.

  1. Read roots. Roots take in water and minerals, but they do not make food.
    roots: no
  2. Read flower. The flower makes seeds, not food for the whole plant.
    flower: seeds
  3. Read leaves. Leaves use light to make food for the whole plant.
    leaves: food
  4. Write the answer.
    leaves

Check. The leaves are the food-makers of the plant. ✓

Worked example 2.6.3
Why is a tree trunk the same kind of part as a bean plant stem?

Method. Think about what both parts do.

  1. Look at the bean stem. The bean stem holds up the leaves and flower, and carries water and food.
    holds up and carries
  2. Look at the trunk. A tree trunk holds up the branches and leaves, and carries water and food too.
    holds up and carries
  3. Compare them. Both are stems, so they do the same jobs.
    both are stems
  4. Write the answer.
Both are stems, so they hold up the leaves and flowers, and carry water and food.

Check. A trunk is a thick, woody stem. ✓

Watch out

Watch out: a tree is a flowering plant too, even though its flowers may be small and hard to see. A tree has the same four main parts.

Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). Choose a tree in a park or garden with a grown-up. Look at its trunk, its leaves and any flowers. Do not dig or touch the roots. Draw one labelled picture, with the words roots, trunk, leaves and flower. Wash your hands afterwards if you touched anything.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “What job does each part do? What would happen if the roots were cut?” Let your child explain the tree picture to you, part by part.

Exercise 2F  The parts working together

1
FWhich part of a tree is the same as the stem of a bean plant? Write the part.
2
FWhich part holds the plant in the soil? Write the part.
3
FWhich part makes seeds? Write the part.
4
FWhich part carries water up from the roots? Write the part.
5
FUse the table. Write the first job of the stem.
PartMain job
Rootshold the plant in the soil; take in water and minerals
Stemholds up the leaves and flower; carries water and minerals up, and food from the leaves
Leavescatch light and use it to make food
Flowermakes seeds
6
FTwo parts work together to take in water and carry it up to the leaves. Write the two parts.
7
PSA bean plant has 4 leaves on one stem and 5 leaves on another stem. How many leaves are there in all?
8
PSWorking scientifically. Plan how you could compare a tree and a bean plant. Write one thing to compare and one thing to measure.
9
RRuby says the trunk of a tree and the stem of a bean plant do the same job. Is she right? Write yes or no.
10
RTom says the leaves hold the plant in the soil. Is Tom right? Write no, and say which part does this job.
11
RPut these in the order that water travels from the soil to the leaves: leaves, roots, stem. Write the order.
