Changing state: melting and freezing
Some materials can change state. This means they change from a solid to a liquid, or from a liquid to a solid. Changes of state happen when a material is heated or cooled.
When a solid is heated and turns into a liquid, it is melting. When a liquid is cooled and turns into a solid, it is freezing. Ice melts when it is heated, and water freezes when it is cooled.
Yusuf timed two ice cubes, both the same size. The table shows how long each one took to melt.
| Place | Minutes to melt |
|---|---|
| Warm room, 22 degrees Celsius | 20 |
| Cool room, 12 degrees Celsius | 40 |
Key ideas
- Melting is when a solid changes into a liquid, by heating.
- Freezing is when a liquid changes into a solid, by cooling.
- Some materials change state when they are heated or cooled.
- The warmer the place, the faster ice melts.
Method. Think about the change.
- Read the change. The ice is a solid that becomes a liquid when heated.solid to liquid
- Name the change. A solid that turns into a liquid by heating is melting.melting
- Write the answer. melting
Check. Melting is caused by heating. ✓
Method. Think about the change.
- Read the change. The water is a liquid that becomes a solid when it is cooled.liquid to solid
- Name the change. A liquid that turns into a solid by cooling is freezing.freezing
- Write the answer. freezing
Check. Freezing is caused by cooling. ✓
Method. Compare the two times in the table.
- Read the times. The warm room took 20 minutes. The cool room took 40 minutes.20 and 40
- Choose the faster. The shorter time is for the warm room, so it melted faster.warm room
- Write the answer. Warm room
Check. Warmer places melt ice faster. ✓
Watch out
Watch out: a material does not change state just because it is cold. It changes state when its temperature is high enough, or low enough, for that material.
Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). With a grown-up, place two ice cubes in two dishes, one in a sunny spot and one in a shady spot indoors. Look at them every 10 minutes, and write down what you see. Do not put ice in your mouth, and dry the floor if it gets wet.
Exam tip
Grown-up tip. Ask: “Which one is melting faster? Why do you think that is?” Let your child time each cube and write the results in a table.
Exercise 7A Changing state: melting and freezing
Method. Read the key idea in section 7.1.
- Read the key idea. When a solid is heated and turns into a liquid, it is melting.melting
- Write the answer. melting
Check. Melting is caused by heating. ✓
Method. Read the key idea in section 7.1.
- Read the key idea. When a liquid is cooled and turns into a solid, it is freezing.freezing
- Write the answer. freezing
Check. Freezing is caused by cooling. ✓
Method. Think about the change.
- Read the change. A solid becomes a liquid when it is heated.heated
- Write the answer. melting
Check. Heating a solid makes it melt. ✓
Method. Think about the change.
- Read the change. A liquid becomes a solid when it is cooled.cooled
- Write the answer. freezing
Check. Cooling a liquid makes it freeze. ✓
Method. Read the key idea in section 7.1.
- Read the key idea. Some materials change state when they are heated or cooled.some materials
- Write the answer. yes
Check. Ice and candle wax both change state when heated. ✓
Method. Read the key idea in section 7.1.
- Read the key idea. Cooling a liquid makes it freeze, or set, as a solid.cooling
- Write the answer. cooling
Check. Cooling reverses melting. ✓
Method. Think about what melting means.
- Think about the wax. Melting is a change from a solid to a liquid.solid to liquid
- Decide. So the wax is changing state, and the answer is yes.yes
- Write the answer. yes
Check. Melting is a change of state. ✓
Method. Read the cool room row.
- Read the row. The cool room row says 40 minutes.40
- Write the answer. 40
Check. The cool room was slower. ✓
Method. Subtract the warm room time from the cool room time.
- Read the times. The cool room took 40 minutes, and the warm room took 20 minutes.40 and 20
- Subtract. 40 minus 20 is 20.40 - 20 = 20
- Write the answer. 20
Check. Check: 20 plus 20 makes 40. ✓
Method. Think about where ice melts.
- Think about the freezer. A freezer is cold, so ice does not melt in it.cold
- Decide. Ice melts when it is warmer than freezing, so the answer is no.no
- Write the answer. no
Check. Ice melts in warmer places, not in a freezer. ✓
Method. Think about what makes ice melt.
- Think about the sun. The sun warms the ice, which makes it melt.warms the ice
- Write the prediction. So the ice in the sun should melt faster.faster
- Write the answer. Accept any prediction that the ice in the sun will melt faster, because it is warmer.
Check. Test your prediction with a grown-up, and time both cubes. ✓
Method. Think about the room temperature.
- Think about the heat. A warmer room gives more heat to the ice.more heat
- Write the reason. So the ice gets heated more quickly, and it melts faster.melts faster
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says the warm room is warmer, so it heats the ice more quickly and the ice melts faster.
Check. Heat makes the ice change state. ✓
