Year 4 Science: Evaporation
Part of the Year 4 Science changing state and the water cycle chapter. Chapter overview · whole chapter on one page
Evaporation
Evaporation is when a liquid changes into a gas. Water at the surface of a puddle, a lake, the sea or a wet cloth turns into water vapour, which is a gas, and goes into the air. Evaporation happens at any temperature, but it happens faster when it is warmer.
The table shows the results of the drying test. The fastest result has the smallest number of minutes.
| Place | Temperature (degrees Celsius) | Minutes to dry |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny windowsill | 28 | 30 |
| Shady corner | 18 | 60 |
| Cool hallway | 12 | 90 |
Key ideas
- Evaporation is when a liquid changes into a gas.
- Evaporation happens faster when it is warmer.
- Evaporation is part of the water cycle.
- A wet cloth dries faster in a warm place than in a cool place.
Method. Find the smallest number of minutes.
- Read the minutes. The minutes are 30, 60 and 90.30 is the smallest
- Name the place. The sunny windowsill took 30 minutes, the fastest.Sunny windowsill
- Write the answer. Sunny windowsill
Check. The sunny windowsill was the warmest place. ✓
Method. Subtract the two times.
- Read the two times. The shady corner took 60 minutes, and the sunny windowsill took 30.60 and 30
- Subtract. 60 minus 30 is 30.60 - 30 = 30
- Write the answer. 30
Check. Check: 30 plus 30 makes 60. ✓
Method. Look at the temperatures and the times together.
- Compare them. The warmest place, 28 degrees, dried fastest, in 30 minutes.warmest, fastest
- Decide. So evaporation is faster when it is warmer, and the answer is yes.yes
- Write the answer. yes
Check. The pattern is the same for all three places. ✓
Watch out
Watch out: evaporation is not the same as boiling. Evaporation happens at the surface of the liquid at any temperature, while boiling needs a high temperature.
Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). Wet two tea towels with a grown-up. Hang one on a sunny windowsill and one in a shady place, and check each one every 30 minutes. Write down which dries first. Do not use hot water.
Exam tip
Grown-up tip. Ask: “Which towel dried first? Was it the warm place or the cool place?” Let your child time the towels and write the results in a table.
Exercise 7C Evaporation
Method. Read the key idea in section 7.3.
- Read the key idea. Evaporation is when a liquid changes into a gas.evaporation
- Write the answer. evaporation
Check. A puddle dries up by evaporation. ✓
Method. Read the table in section 7.3.
- Read the minutes. The sunny windowsill took 30 minutes, the least.30
- Write the answer. Sunny windowsill
Check. The fastest time is 30 minutes. ✓
Method. Read the table in section 7.3.
- Read the minutes. The cool hallway took 90 minutes, the most.90
- Write the answer. Cool hallway
Check. The cool hallway was the coldest place. ✓
Method. Read the shady corner row.
- Read the row. The shady corner row says 60 minutes.60
- Write the answer. 60
Check. Sixty minutes is between 30 and 90. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read the cool hallway row. The cool hallway was 12 degrees Celsius.12
- Write the answer. 12
Check. Twelve degrees is the coldest place. ✓
Method. Read the key idea in section 7.3.
- Read the key idea. Evaporation happens faster when it is warmer.faster
- Write the answer. yes
Check. Warmth speeds up evaporation. ✓
Method. Think about evaporation at any temperature.
- Think about the cool hallway. The cloth still dried in the cool hallway, but more slowly.more slowly
- Decide. So evaporation does happen there, and the answer is yes.yes
- Write the answer. yes
Check. Evaporation happens at any temperature, but faster when warm. ✓
Method. Subtract the two times.
- Read the two times. The cool hallway took 90 minutes, and the sunny windowsill took 30.90 and 30
- Subtract. 90 minus 30 is 60.90 - 30 = 60
- Write the answer. 60
Check. Check: 30 plus 60 makes 90. ✓
Method. Think about the pattern in the table.
- Think about the pattern. Evaporation is faster when it is warmer.warmer
- Decide. So the warm towel dries faster.warm
- Write the answer. warm
Check. The table shows the same pattern. ✓
Method. Look at the table.
- Look at the times. The cool hallway took the longest, 90 minutes.90 minutes
- Decide. So Ruby is not right.no
- Write the answer. no
Check. Warmer places dried the cloth faster. ✓
Method. Use the pattern in the table.
- Think about the sun. The sun makes the puddle warmer.warmer
- Write the prediction. So the puddle in the sun should dry faster.faster
- Write the answer. Accept any prediction that the puddle in the sun will dry faster, because it is warmer.
Check. Test your prediction safely, with a grown-up. ✓
Method. Think about the two things that help.
- Think about the warmth. Warmth makes the water evaporate faster.warmth
- Think about the wind. Wind carries the water vapour away from the washing.carries away
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says warmth speeds up evaporation, and wind carries the water vapour away.
Check. Two things help the washing dry. ✓
