Year 4 Science: Condensation
Part of the Year 4 Science changing state and the water cycle chapter. Chapter overview · whole chapter on one page
Condensation
Condensation is when a gas changes back into a liquid. Water vapour in the air cools, and turns into tiny drops of water. This is the opposite of evaporation.
We see condensation on a cold glass, on a cold mirror when you breathe on it, and as dew on grass on a cool morning. In the sky, condensation forms the clouds.
Key ideas
- Condensation is when water vapour cools and changes into a liquid.
- Condensation is the opposite of evaporation.
- Drops on the outside of a cold drink are caused by condensation.
- Clouds form in the sky when water vapour cools and condenses.
Method. Read the description.
- Read the change. A gas (water vapour) cools and turns into a liquid (drops).gas to liquid
- Name the change. A change from gas to liquid by cooling is condensation.condensation
- Write the answer. condensation
Check. Condensation makes drops on a cold surface. ✓
Method. Think about where the warm air is.
- Think about the air. The warm air is outside the glass, and it touches the cold surface.outside
- Decide. So the drops form on the outside of the glass.outside
- Write the answer. outside
Check. The drops come from the warm air around the glass. ✓
Method. Think about the change.
- Think about the states. Condensation changes water vapour, which is a gas, into a liquid.gas to a liquid
- Decide. So the answer is yes.yes
- Write the answer. yes
Check. Evaporation is the other way round. ✓
Watch out
Watch out: condensation does not take water away from the air. It changes water vapour in the air back into liquid drops.
Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). Breathe onto a clean, cold window or a cold mirror with a grown-up. Watch the mist form, and then fade. Say what has happened to the water vapour from your breath. Do not breathe onto anything that is not clean.
Exam tip
Grown-up tip. Ask: “Where did the mist come from? What happened to it when it went?” Let your child explain condensation and evaporation in their own words.

Method. Read the key idea in section 7.3.
- Read the key idea. Evaporation is when a liquid changes into a gas.liquid into a gas
- Write the answer. yes
Check. Evaporation and condensation are opposite changes. ✓
Method. Think about the water vapour from your breath.
- Think about the mist. The warm breath cools on the mirror, and turns into tiny drops.cools
- Name the change. That change is condensation.condensation
- Write the answer. condensation
Check. The mist is made of drops of water. ✓
Method. Think about what evaporation changes.
- Think about evaporation. Evaporation changes a liquid into a gas.liquid into a gas
- Find the opposite. The opposite change is a gas back into a liquid, which is condensation.condensation
- Write the answer. condensation
Check. Melting changes a solid into a liquid. ✓
Method. Think about how dew forms.
- Think about the dew. Water vapour in the air cools on the grass, and turns into drops.cools
- Name the change. That is condensation.condensation
- Write the answer. condensation
Check. Dew is made of tiny drops of water. ✓
Method. Think about what condensation does.
- Think about the change. Condensation changes water vapour in the air into drops, which fall or stay on a surface.drops
- Decide. So condensation does not take water away from the air, and Ali is not right.no
- Write the answer. no
Check. Condensation changes the water, it does not remove it. ✓
Method. Think about a fair test.
- Think about the test. Only the thing you change should be different; the drink and the room should stay the same.stay the same
- Write one thing. For example, use the same glass each time.same glass
- Write the answer. Accept any one thing, such as: the same cold drink, the same room, or the same glass.
Check. A fair test keeps everything else the same. ✓
Method. Think about the air.
- Think about the air. The air around the glass contains water vapour.water vapour
- Write the reason. The vapour cools on the glass and condenses into drops.condenses
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says water vapour in the warm air cools on the cold glass, and turns into drops.
Check. Condensation is caused by cooling. ✓
