Key words. An instruction tells you how to do something, step by step.

Method. Start with the step that happens first. Then put the other steps after it, in order.

  1. Find the first step. Washing your hands is always the first thing to do.
Wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Put the rest in order. Each step happens after the one before it.
Wash your hands with soap and water. → Put two slices of bread on a plate. → Put the other slice on top, with the jam inside.
  3. Write the order.

Check. Read the steps in your new order out loud. It makes sense. ✓

Watch out. Check that no step is missing, and that no step is written twice.

Watch out

Watch out: the top slice goes on after the jam, so the jam is inside. If the jam is on the outside, the sandwich is not right.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Check first that nobody is allergic to jam or bread. Let your child read each step out loud and point to it. You do the knife work, with your child watching.
