Labels and captions

Year 1
Read labels, captions and lists in a fact text
Labels and captions.

A label is a word, or a short name, that tells you what one thing in a picture is called. A caption is a whole sentence under a picture. It tells you more about the picture.

Look at the seaside picture. Each number is on one part of the beach. Read the seaside text in the box, too.

Look at the numbers. Each number is on one part of the beach. Word bank: sun, sea, sand, rock, crab.

At the seaside

The seaside is where the land meets the sea. The sea moves in and out, and waves roll onto the sand. On the sand you can find shells and pebbles. Some seaside places have rock pools. In a rock pool you can find crabs and tiny fish. Seagulls fly over the beach.

Key ideas

  • A label names one thing. It is a word, like crab.
  • A caption is a whole sentence. It tells us about the picture, like A crab is on the sand.
  • A caption starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop.
  • Numbers in a picture show which part a label is for.
Worked example 10.3.1
Is Pebbles a label or a caption?

Key words. A label names one part of a picture. A caption is a sentence about the picture.

Method. Read the sentence, then decide what kind of writing it is.

  1. Read the sentence. Think about what it tells us, or what it asks us to do.
    Pebbles
  2. Decide what it is. It is one word or a short name, and it names one thing in the picture.
    label
  3. Write the answer.
    Label

Check. Read it again and check the answer makes sense. ✓

Watch out. A label is a word. A caption is a sentence. Count the words, and look for the full stop.

Worked example 10.3.2
Is The sand is warm and yellow. a label or a caption?

Key words. A label names one part of a picture. A caption is a sentence about the picture.

Method. Read the sentence, then decide what kind of writing it is.

  1. Read the sentence. Think about what it tells us, or what it asks us to do.
The sand is warm and yellow.
  2. Decide what it is. It is a whole sentence, and it tells us about the picture.
    caption
  3. Write the answer.
    Caption

Check. Read it again and check the answer makes sense. ✓

Watch out. A label is a word. A caption is a sentence. Count the words, and look for the full stop.

Worked example 10.3.3
Which is the better caption for a picture of the sea? A: The sea is blue. B: I like cake.

Method. A caption tells us about the whole picture. Choose the sentence that is about the sea.

  1. Read both sentences. Does each one tell us about the sea?
A: The sea is blue.   B: I like cake.
  2. Find the one about the sea. The sea is blue, so it tells us about the picture.
    The sea is blue.
  3. Write the letter. The caption about the sea is A.
    A

Check. Sentence B is about cake, not the sea, so it is not the caption. ✓

Watch out. A caption must be about the picture, not about something else you like.

Watch out

Watch out: a label is only a word or a short name. A caption is a whole sentence. Do not write a label as a sentence, and do not write a caption as one word.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Look at a picture in a book together. Ask: “What is this called?” (a label). Then ask: “What is happening here?” (a caption). Your child can say a whole sentence, and you can write it down.
