Seed dispersal

Year 3
Explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle: how seeds are dispersed by the wind, by water, by animals and by splitting pods
Story. Oliver and Zainab find a dandelion clock on the grass, and a sycamore seed spinning down from a tree. Oliver asks, “Why do the seeds need to travel?” Zainab says, “If they all dropped right by the parent plant, they would be crowded, and they would share the light and water.”

Seed dispersal means spreading seeds away from the parent plant. Seeds are dispersed so that:

Plants use different ways to disperse their seeds. The table shows some of them.

MethodExampleHow the seed moves
winddandeliona fluffy parachute is carried on the breeze
windsycamorea wing lets the seed spin and drift down
watercoconutthe seed floats on water and is carried away
animalsburrhooks on the burr stick to fur and are carried
animalsapplethe seeds are eaten inside the fruit and dropped or passed out elsewhere
split podsgorsethe dry pod splits open with a pop and throws the seeds out
wind: dandelionwater: coconut floatsanimals: burr on fursplit pods: seeds fly out
Four ways seeds are dispersed: a dandelion seed in the wind, a coconut in water, a burr on fur, and a pod that splits.

Key ideas

  • Seed dispersal means spreading seeds away from the parent plant.
  • Plants use the wind, water, animals and splitting pods to disperse their seeds.
  • Dispersal helps new plants to have room, light, water and nutrients.
  • A dispersed seed can grow into a new plant and start the life cycle again.
Worked example 4.4.1
A dandelion seed has a fluffy parachute. How is this seed dispersed? Write the method.

Method. Look at the method in the table for a parachute.

  1. Find the seed. The dandelion has a fluffy parachute, which catches the breeze.
    parachute
  2. Find the method. A seed moved by the breeze is dispersed by the wind.
    wind
  3. Write the answer.
    wind

Check. The table shows that the dandelion uses the wind. ✓

Worked example 4.4.2
Which seed is carried by water: the coconut or the burr? Write the seed.

Method. Think about which seed floats.

  1. Read the coconut. A coconut floats on water and is carried away.
    coconut floats
  2. Read the burr. A burr hooks on to fur, so it is carried by an animal.
    burr on fur
  3. Choose the seed. So the coconut is the seed carried by water.
    coconut
  4. Write the answer.
    coconut

Check. The coconut floats, so it is dispersed by water. ✓

Worked example 4.4.3
Which seed has a wing so that it spins down from the tree? Write the example.

Method. Look for the seed with a wing in the table.

  1. Find the wing. The sycamore has a wing that lets it spin and drift down.
    wing
  2. Name the example. So the example is the sycamore.
    sycamore
  3. Write the answer.
    sycamore

Check. The sycamore seed is dispersed by the wind. ✓

Watch out

Watch out: a plant does not decide where its seeds go. Its seeds are carried by the wind, by water, by animals, or by pods that split open.

Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). With a grown-up, find a dandelion clock or a sycamore seed that has already fallen, in a park or school field. Do not pick any plant. Drop each seed from the same height, about one metre, and watch how it falls. Which one falls more slowly? Wash your hands afterwards.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “How does this seed move? What does it need to be carried?” Let your child explain what the wing or the parachute does.

Exercise 4D  Seed dispersal

1
FWhat is the word for spreading seeds away from the parent plant? Write the words.
2
FWhich method of dispersal uses a fluffy parachute? Write the method.
3
FFill in the gaps.
(a)A coconut can float on ___, and be carried to a new place.
(b)A burr sticks to an animal's ___.
4
FWhich seed is spread by a wing, and spins down from a tree? Write the example.
5
FWhich method of dispersal does a gorse pod use? Write the method.
6
FLook at the dispersal picture. Which seed is stuck to fur? Write the example.
wind: dandelionwater: coconut floatsanimals: burr on fursplit pods: seeds fly out
7
FWhich method of dispersal uses fruit that animals eat? Write the method.
8
PSThe table lists six examples of seed dispersal. How many of them are dispersed by the wind? Write the number.
MethodExampleHow the seed moves
winddandeliona fluffy parachute is carried on the breeze
windsycamorea wing lets the seed spin and drift down
watercoconutthe seed floats on water and is carried away
animalsburrhooks on the burr stick to fur and are carried
animalsapplethe seeds are eaten inside the fruit and dropped or passed out elsewhere
split podsgorsethe dry pod splits open with a pop and throws the seeds out
9
PSA dandelion head has 40 seeds. 15 of them blow away in the breeze. How many seeds are left on the head?
10
PSWorking scientifically. Plan a fair test: a class wants to find out whether a sycamore seed falls more slowly with its wing than without it. Write one thing that must stay the same for both seeds.
11
RSam says all seeds are dispersed by animals. Is Sam right? Write no, and name one method that is not animals.
12
RExplain in one sentence why a plant gains from having its seeds spread out, rather than falling right next to it.
