Seedlings and growth

Year 3
Explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle: how a seedling grows, and how it becomes a flowering plant that starts the cycle again
Story. Amira’s bean seed has sprouted, and it is now a seedling in a pot on the windowsill. Mo asks, “When a young plant has no leaves yet, where does its food come from?” Mr Patel says, “At first it uses the stored food from the seed. Then its leaves start to make food from light.”

A seedling is a young plant that has grown from a seed. Its root grows down into the soil, and its shoot grows up towards the light. Its first leaves open out.

At first, the seedling uses the stored food from inside the seed. Soon its leaves can make food, using light, water and carbon dioxide. Its roots take in water and nutrients from the soil.

As the plant grows, it becomes a young plant, and then a flowering plant. When it flowers, the plant can be pollinated and make seeds, and the life cycle goes on.

A seedling: its root grows down into the soil, its shoot grows up, and its first leaves open out.

Amira measured one seedling with a ruler, every two days. The table shows its height.

day 43 cm
day 66 cm

Key ideas

  • A seedling is a young plant that has grown from a seed.
  • The root grows down into the soil, and the shoot grows up towards the light.
  • At first the seedling uses stored food; then its leaves make food.
  • The young plant grows into a flowering plant, and the life cycle goes on.
Worked example 4.6.1
Which part of the seedling grows down into the soil? Write the part.

Method. Look at the picture of the seedling.

  1. Look at the picture. The part that goes down into the soil is in the soil.
    in the soil
  2. Name the part. This part is the root.
    root
  3. Write the answer.
    root

Check. Roots grow down and take in water and nutrients. ✓

Worked example 4.6.2
Use the table. How many cm did the seedling grow from day 2 to day 4? Write the number of cm.
DayHeight of the seedling
day 21 cm
day 43 cm
day 66 cm

Method. Take the height on day 2 away from the height on day 4.

  1. Read the two heights. The seedling was 1 cm on day 2 and 3 cm on day 4.
    1 and 3
  2. Find the growth. The growth is the later height minus the earlier height.
    3 − 1 = 2
  3. Write the answer.
    2 cm

Check. 1 + 2 = 3, so the answer is right. ✓

Worked example 4.6.3
Use the table. Between which two days did the seedling grow the most? Write the days.
DayHeight of the seedling
day 21 cm
day 43 cm
day 66 cm

Method. Compare the growth in each part of the table.

  1. Day 2 to day 4. The seedling grew 2 cm.
    2 cm
  2. Day 4 to day 6. The seedling grew 3 cm, which is more.
    3 cm
  3. Choose the days. The most growth was between day 4 and day 6.
    day 4 and day 6
  4. Write the answer.
    day 4 and day 6

Check. 3 is bigger than 2. ✓

Watch out

Watch out: a seedling does not keep using the stored food for ever. Its leaves must make food, and that needs light. A seedling kept in the dark soon grows weakly once its stored food has run out.

Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). With a grown-up, find a flower in a garden or park, and do not pick or touch it. Look at its petals and its centre, using a magnifying glass if you have one. Watch from a safe distance for an insect that visits it. Wash your hands afterwards.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “Where is the middle of the flower? Which parts are the petals?” Let your child find the petals, and say why an insect might visit.

Exercise 4F  Seedlings and growth

1
FWhat is a seedling? Write one short sentence.
2
FWhich part of the seedling takes in water and nutrients from the soil? Write the part.
3
FWhich part of the seedling makes food, using light? Write the part.
4
FFill in the gaps.
(a)At first, a seedling uses the ___ inside the seed.
(b)Leaves use ___ to make food.
5
FLook at the seedling picture. Which way does the shoot grow? Write up or down.
shoot grows uprootgrows downfirst leavesseed withstored foodsoil
6
FUse the table. How tall was the seedling on day 4? Write the number of cm.
DayHeight of the seedling
day 21 cm
day 43 cm
day 66 cm
7
PSUse the table. How much did the seedling grow from day 4 to day 6? Write the number of cm.
DayHeight of the seedling
day 21 cm
day 43 cm
day 66 cm
8
PSAli says the seedling grew 7 cm from day 2 to day 6. Is Ali right? Use the table, and write yes or no.
DayHeight of the seedling
day 21 cm
day 43 cm
day 66 cm
9
PSWorking scientifically. Predict the height of the seedling on day 8, if it grows the same amount as it did from day 4 to day 6. Write the number of cm.
10
RExplain in one sentence why a seedling needs its leaves to make food, once its stored food is used up.
11
RExplain how a seed can grow into a flowering plant that makes new seeds. Use at least three stages of the life cycle in your answer.
