Seed formation and fruit

Year 3
Explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle: how seeds form after pollination, inside a fruit
Story. Ruby and Yusuf find a bean pod on their plant, and open it carefully. Ruby counts five beans inside. Yusuf asks, “Where did these seeds come from? The flower must have made them.” Ruby says, “I think the flower had to be pollinated first.”

After pollination, the petals of the flower usually dry up and fall off. The female part of the flower then starts to change. Seeds form inside the female part, and its lower part swells and grows into a fruit.

A fruit is the part of a flowering plant that contains seeds. The fruit protects the seeds while they develop. The fruit of a bean plant is a pod. Other fruits include apples and tomatoes. A tomato is a fruit, even though many people use it as a vegetable.

Seed formation is the stage in which the seeds form inside the fruit. A pod can hold several seeds, and they keep growing until they are ready to be dispersed.

A bean pod, which is the fruit, with five seeds inside it.

Key ideas

  • After pollination, seeds form inside the female part of the flower.
  • A fruit is the part of a flowering plant that contains seeds.
  • The fruit of a bean plant is a pod, and the pod holds the seeds.
  • The fruit protects the seeds while they develop.
Worked example 4.3.1
Which part of a bean plant is the fruit? A: the pod B: the root. Write A or B.

Method. Think about which part holds the seeds.

  1. Read A. The pod is the fruit of the bean plant, and it holds the seeds.
    A: pod holds seeds
  2. Read B. The root takes in water and nutrients, and does not hold seeds.
    B: root
  3. Choose. So the pod is the fruit.
    A
  4. Write the answer.
    A

Check. The fruit holds the seeds, and the pod is the bean plant fruit. ✓

Watch out. The root is in the soil. It does not make or hold seeds.

Worked example 4.3.2
A bean plant has 4 pods, and each pod has 5 seeds. How many seeds are there in all?

Method. Multiply the number of pods by the seeds in each pod.

  1. Read the two numbers. There are 4 pods, and each pod has 5 seeds.
    4 pods, 5 seeds
  2. Multiply. The total is the number of pods times the seeds in each pod.
    4 x 5 = 20
  3. Write the answer.
    20 seeds

Check. 5 added 4 times is 20. ✓

Worked example 4.3.3
What must happen before seeds can form in a flower: pollination or seed dispersal? Write the word.

Method. Think about the order of the stages.

  1. Read the order. Pollination comes before seed formation in the life cycle.
    pollination first
  2. Choose the word. So pollination must happen before seeds form.
    pollination
  3. Write the answer.
    pollination

Check. Pollination comes first, then seeds form. ✓

Watch out

Watch out: the petals are not the seeds. The petals fall off, and the seeds form inside the female part, which grows into the fruit.

Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). With a grown-up, look at a dry bean pod from a garden plant, or a pea pod from the kitchen. Open it carefully and count the seeds inside. Write the number in a table. Do not eat the seeds unless a grown-up says they are safe to eat. Wash your hands afterwards.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “How many seeds are in this pod? Why do you think the pod holds them?” Let your child count the seeds aloud, one at a time.

Exercise 4C  Seed formation and fruit

1
FWhat is the name of the part of a flowering plant that contains seeds? Write the name.
2
FWhat is the fruit of a bean plant called? Write the name.
3
FFill in the gaps.
(a)After pollination, the ___ of the flower usually fall off.
(b)Seeds form inside the ___.
4
FWhich part of the flower grows into the fruit? Write female part or male part.
5
FLook at the pod picture. How many seeds are inside the pod? Write the number.
fruit (a bean pod)seeds form inside
6
FIs a tomato a fruit? Write yes or no.
7
PSA bean plant has three pods. The first pod has 5 seeds, the second has 4 and the third has 6. How many seeds are there in all?
8
PSMo counts 20 seeds from one bean plant. He plants 6 of them. How many seeds are left?
9
PSWorking scientifically. Record and conclude: Ali counts the seeds in three pods and writes 5, 4 and 6. He says every pod holds the same number of seeds. Is he right? Write yes or no.
10
RSam says the petals turn into the seeds. Is Sam right? Write no, and say where the seeds form.
11
RExplain why pollination must happen before a fruit with seeds can form. Write one or two sentences.
