Worked example 2.1.1
How many tens are in 500?

Method. Count how many hundreds there are, then count ten tens in each.

  1. Think of 500 as hundreds. 500 is 5 hundreds.
    500 = 5 hundreds
  2. Each hundred has ten tens. One hundred is the same as ten tens.
    5 x 10 = 50
  3. Write the answer.
    50

Check. Check: 50 tens is 500, because 5 hundreds is 500.

Watch out. One hundred is ten tens. Multiply the hundreds by 10 to find the tens.

Worked example 2.1.2
How many hundreds are in 684?

Method. The hundreds digit tells us how many whole hundreds there are.

  1. Look at the hundreds digit in 684. The hundreds digit tells us how many hundreds.
    The hundreds digit is 6
  2. Count the whole hundreds. The tens and ones are not whole hundreds, so we leave them out.
    684 is 6 hundreds and 84 more
  3. Write the answer. This is the number of whole hundreds.
    6

Check. 6 hundreds is 600, which is the start of 684.

Watch out. Count the hundreds digit, not the whole number.

Worked example 2.1.3
