Writing numbers in numerals and words

Level 3
Read and write numbers from 100 to 1000 in numerals and in words

We write the hundreds first in words, then “and”, then the tens and ones.

In numerals, each digit goes in its own place. The words for 100 to 999 follow the same pattern.

Key ideas

  • Hundreds first, then tens and ones.
  • Put “and” before the tens and ones.
  • No “and” if there are no tens or ones.
Worked example 2.3.1
Write 352 in words.

Method. Use the hundreds first, then the tens and ones.

  1. Say the hundreds in words. Hundreds come first.
352 has 3 hundreds: three hundred
  2. Say the tens and ones in words. Say the number after hundred.
    fifty-two
  3. Join them with "and". British English puts and before the tens and ones.
    three hundred and fifty-two

Check. Say it back: 352 is three hundred and fifty-two.

Watch out. Write hundred and then and before the tens and ones, like three hundred and seven.

Worked example 2.3.2
Write 400 in words.

Method. Use the hundreds first, then the tens and ones.

  1. Say the hundreds in words. Hundreds come first.
400 has 4 hundreds: four hundred
  2. There are no tens or ones. So the number is only hundreds.
    nothing else
  3. Write the answer.
    four hundred

Check. Say it back: 400 is four hundred.

Watch out. Write hundred and then and before the tens and ones, like three hundred and seven.

Worked example 2.3.3
Write in numerals: six hundred and eighteen.

Method. Use the hundreds first, then the tens and ones.

  1. Find the hundreds word. The number before hundred tells us the hundreds.
    six hundred = 600
  2. Find the tens and ones words. Read the words after and.
    eighteen = 18
  3. Add them together. The hundreds and the rest make the number.
    600 + 18 = 618
  4. Write the answer.
    618

Check. Say it back: 618 is six hundred and eighteen.

Watch out. Hundreds come first. Write the digits in the right columns: hundreds, tens, ones.

Watch out

Watch out. Write four hundred and six, not four hundred six and not forty six. Check the hundreds word first.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Say the number out loud in hundreds, tens and ones. Ask the child to point to each column as they say it.
