2.4

The value of each digit

Level 3
Say the value of the digit in the hundreds, tens or ones place

The value of a digit depends on its place. The 6 in 645 is 6 hundreds, which is 600. The 6 in 764 is 6 tens, which is 60.

Find the digit and its place, then multiply by the place value.

Key ideas

  • Hundreds are worth 100 each.
  • Tens are worth 10 each.
  • Ones are worth 1 each.
Worked example 2.4.1
What is the value of the 6 in 684?

Method. Find the digit, then multiply it by its place value. A hundreds digit is worth 100.

  1. Find the hundreds digit in 684. The hundreds digit is in the hundreds column.
    hundreds digit = 6
  2. Multiply by the place value. Each hundreds digit stands for 100 at a time in this column.
    6 x 100 = 600
  3. Write the answer. This is the value of the digit.
    600

Check. Check the other digits add to the number: 684 = 84 + 600.

Watch out. The value is the digit times the place. It is not just the digit.

Worked example 2.4.2
What is the value of the 3 in 473?

Method. Find the digit, then multiply it by its place value. A ones digit is worth 1.

  1. Find the ones digit in 473. The ones digit is in the ones column.
    ones digit = 3
  2. Multiply by the place value. Each ones digit stands for 1 at a time in this column.
    3 x 1 = 3
  3. Write the answer. This is the value of the digit.
    3

Check. Check the other digits add to the number: 473 = 470 + 3.

Watch out. The value is the digit times the place. It is not just the digit.

Worked example 2.4.3
What is the tens digit in 907, and what is its value?

Method. Find the digit, then multiply it by its place value. A tens digit is worth 10.

  1. Find the tens digit in 907. The tens digit is in the tens column.
    tens digit = 0
  2. Multiply by the place value. Each tens digit stands for 10 at a time in this column.
    0 x 10 = 0
  3. Write the answer. This is the value of the digit.
    0

Check. Check the other digits add to the number: 907 = 907 + 0.

Watch out. The value is the digit times the place. It is not just the digit.

Watch out

Watch out. The value of the 4 in 340 is 40, not 4. A digit in the tens place is worth ten times its digit.
