O Level and A Level tuition: choosing the right tutor
Cambridge exams reward a particular kind of preparation. Here is what a good O Level or A Level tutor does differently, and how to find one.

Cambridge O Levels and A Levels are taken by thousands of students in Pakistan every year. They are respected exams, and they are also very specific. Marks depend not only on knowing the subject but on answering exactly what the question asks, in the way the mark scheme expects.
That is why the right tutor makes such a difference.
How Cambridge exams are different
If your child has moved from a local board, or you studied under one yourself, a few things stand out:
- Two exam series a year. Cambridge exams in Pakistan are usually sat in the May/June series or the October/November series. Your school decides which.
- Syllabus codes matter. Each subject has a code, such as Mathematics D 4024 or Physics 5054 at O Level, and Physics 9702 at A Level. Syllabuses are updated from time to time, so the tutor should be teaching the version your child will sit.
- Mark schemes are public. Cambridge publishes past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports. A good tutor uses them constantly.
- A Level comes in two stages. AS Level is normally the first year and A2 the second, and some students sit AS separately.
What a good O Level or A Level tutor does
Teaches to the syllabus, not just the subject
The tutor should know which topics are in your child's syllabus and which are not, and spend time where the marks are. Ask them which topics students most often lose marks on in their subject. Experienced Cambridge tutors answer that straight away.
Uses past papers early, not only in the last month
Past papers are not just for revision. Working through questions topic by topic from the start teaches students the command words: state, describe, explain, suggest, calculate. Each one expects a different kind of answer.
Marks work like an examiner
A tutor who marks practice answers against the official mark scheme shows your child where the marks actually come from. This is often the fastest way to move a grade.
Builds exam technique
Timing, reading the question, showing working, and not leaving blanks all add marks. Good tutors practise full papers under timed conditions in the months before the exam.
When to start
- Steady support from the start of the course works best for subjects your child finds difficult.
- Targeted help for a few months is enough for a student who is mostly on track but weak in specific topics.
- Exam preparation should start at least three to four months before the series, so there is time for several full past papers with feedback.
Starting in the final few weeks can still help, but there is little time left to fix gaps.
Questions to ask an O Level or A Level tutor
- Which syllabus code and year are you teaching from?
- How do you use past papers and mark schemes?
- Which topics do students usually find hardest, and how do you teach them?
- How many students have you taught for this exam, and how did they do?
- Will you set and mark practice under timed conditions?
Subject by subject
Some subjects reward particular skills:
- Mathematics and Additional Mathematics: a lot of practice, and showing working clearly. See maths tutors.
- Physics, Chemistry and Biology: precise definitions, practical skills questions and careful use of units. See physics, chemistry and biology tutors.
- English Language: structure and practice with timed writing. See English tutors.
- Economics, Business Studies and Accounting: applying ideas to the case in the question, not writing everything you know. See economics tutors.
- Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies: structured long answers with the right references and dates. See Islamiyat tutors.
Using results for local admissions
Students planning to apply to Pakistani universities with O and A Level results usually need an equivalence certificate from the IBCC. It is worth checking the requirements of the universities your child is interested in early, because they affect which subjects and grades matter.

Questions people ask
When should my child start O Level tuition?
For a subject they find hard, from the start of the course. For a subject they are mostly comfortable with, three to four months of focused preparation before the exam series is usually enough, with full past papers in the last weeks.
Are past papers enough to prepare for O and A Levels?
Past papers are essential, but they work best after the topics are understood. Use them topic by topic during the course, then as full timed papers near the exam, and always check answers against the mark scheme.
Can one tutor teach both O Level and A Level?
Many can, but A Level goes much deeper. Check that the tutor has taught the A Level syllabus your child is following, not only the O Level one.
Does my child need a Cambridge-specific tutor if they have a good school teacher?
Not always. A tutor helps most when a student is behind, needs more practice than the class gives, or wants to move from a B to an A. If school is going well, a few targeted sessions before exams may be enough.
